Important Tips for Biking in the Winter

The word winter brings to mind wet freezing weather that makes you want to snuggle in and hibernate! Some days it is great to do just that. But then there are the days that dawn cold but crystal clear and you cannot wait to get outside! For the biking enthusiast, these are the days that you can hit the roads and enjoy every minute of it, even though it is winter. The key is to cycle safely and keep in mind some of these tips. Tips on how to safely bike during the winter

  • Even though it may be cold outside it is important to be hydrated before your biking run and to hydrate during and after it. In the cold, you may not realize you are sweating, but you do so be prepared.
  • Visibility can be diminished during the winter season so make sure your bike has reflectors and that your clothing is bright and visible to automobiles that might be out on the road.  Stay on main roads and in proper bike lanes.
  • Wear proper bike riding clothing, outerwear and footwear! You can purchase clothing for every season of the year which helps with comfort and warmth. Dressing in layers will help. You do not want to be too warm or too cold.
  • Inspect your bike often to make sure it is in perfect working condition. Make sure to check your air pressure in your tires and make sure they are properly inflated and still have great tread on them.
  • Winterize your bike with the proper lubricants for wintertime use. Winter weather and the cold can damage your chains, pedals and the metal surfaces of your bike.
  • Use the buddy system! Take another rider with you or let another person know where you will be riding and when you plan on returning. If you don't return by a certain time, they can call for help and they will know where to look for you.
  • Clean your bike after use if your area uses salt on the roads. It will corrode if not washed off
  • Don't leave home without your cell phone! In case of an emergency you will want to have a fully charged cell phone along with you for the ride.

Think safety first when biking during the winter. As always, keep your eye out for others, but by following these tips, you can enjoy a fabulous winter ride. A great workout in the brisk air will do a body good!

Handling Holiday Stress

Tips for Maintaining Activity During the Stressful Holiday Season

It is no secret; the holidays can be a large source of stress for many people. Between seeing family members that may not get along, to working, cooking, shopping and cleaning for a crowd, it is no wonder why some folks want to bypass the Holidays all together. If this sounds like you, know that there are stress relievers that do not include chowing down on every sweet treat in sight.

Here are some tops tips for you to relax, de-stress and maybe even enjoy the holidays, just a bit more.

  • Planning ahead is crucial: Planners and list makers unite! Take the time to sit down and plan out exactly what you need to accomplish each day that pertains to the holiday festivities. Make sure to include some form of daily activity such as walking, running or bike riding to help reduce the stress.
  • Break Activities into Portions: No time for exercise? If you find yourself saying that often, then break it into small portions. If you normally take a 30 minute walk during lunch, but find yourself running errands, park further away from the store and get more walking in. If you cannot get out to run due to weather, pop in an exercise DVD and do that instead.
  • Let Others Help: I know. I know… letting go of some things is difficult but if you can delegate mundane tasks to others, that will free you up to work on what is more important and free some time for those relaxing activities you need.
  • Stop Saying Yes: As women, I think we feel obligated to say yes when someone calls needing 10 pies at the last minute. But saying No once in a while doesn’t hurt you. There are always alternatives. Get good at finding alternatives and reducing your stress levels.
  • Choose to be Happy: For many, it is a choice. Exercise and activity helps reduce the stress and therefore allows you to be happy. Know that and embrace it for a true stress reliever. Use these tips to help reduce the stress you may be feeling and take time out this holiday season for you. If you take care of you first, then you can handle the holiday craziness!

Pedal Chic Closes Out First Season of Spin & Sip Rides - Bike Fashion and Friendship

Spin & Sip Rides at Pedal Chic Bike Shop

This year we tried something new.  We wanted to encourage more people to get on their bikes again so we started a social ride on Tuesday nights called Spin & Sip.  We posted the rides on our social media channels and it took on a life of it's own.  The concept was simple.  We met on the patio at Pedal Chic bike shop and then rode the Swamp Rabbit Trail.  At first we did not go that far, but no one was left behind.  It was BYOB & B (beverages and bikes) and we rented bikes to those that did not have their own ... yet!

We asked our riders to share their thoughts on what these group rides have meant to them and here is what they had to say in our Facebook group.

"What this group means to me is life! A new chapter with some new great friends. I felt myself starting to go into a depression so I bought a bike. Within the first week I showed up at Spin & Sip not knowing a soul but felt welcomed from the start. This group made my year. I am so thankful God directed me to it. It means the world to me and I can't wait till next year!!! Love you guys. smile. CJ"

"Riding with the girls was so much fun! It was so cool to sit and sip afterwards! It is so great to be a part of this wonderful group! Everyone looks after each other. Can't wait to ride again soon! Hope we can still ride together some Saturdays! Thanks Pedal Chics for some wonderful memories! smile"

"After a two year "hiatus", evry mile gave me a new confidence. Very theraputic."

What did we learn from our first season of this very special ride?  If you start it they will ride!  Looking forward to our next season.  We ride again in March 2013!
