We fell in love with Greenville

Posted on

We finally made our big move from Doylestown, PA last year. We fell in love with Greenville in 2007, when we purchased a golf course lot in Travellers Rest in 2007.

We picked this town for us to work (and work ) our final few years and then retire in a place that had many great things going for it. Notable among those things were two:

  • wonderful friendly people
  • outstanding cycling

My first ride down here was two months after we bought our lot mentioned above. Someone said try the Bakery Ride to Saluda.

Saluda Store Front

My gosh, old route 25 was Heaven! What more could a cyclist want? Nice climb, no traffic, nice tree canopy! I was in love. I was on my way to become a South Carolinean. I was riding a Douglas Titanium roadie which I stored in a rental shelter in North Carolina.

The following year 2008, we met some folks who had an inside track on the VIP lane at the US Pro Cycling Championships. That sealed the deal.

I travelled from my home in PA regularly to our office in Kings Mountain, NC. When I did I would grab my roadie from the nearby storage shed and ride regularly.

In January 2011, we flew down for a house-hunting trip. We realized that though the Travellers Rest lot was beautiful it wasn’t in the right spot for us. We found a great home in Greer, made a contingent offer, and put our house in Doylestown on the market.

As we did this, I wanted to this southern bike to store in Greenville. I searched for Bike Shops that might help and found Pedal Chic. I sent an email through the website and 30 minutes later the owner, Robin Bylenga called me. She was in an airport on her way back from a show somewhere in the Midwest. She bent over backwards to do whatever she could to help including allowing me to store the bike in the shop.

Robin is a great example of the wonderfully friendly people I mentioned above. I have had the chance to frequent her shop and she has a unique idea that is taking off.

Given how memorable her kindness was and the great shop she has when I had the opportunity to contribute here and tell my story, I jumped at the chance. I look forward to a healthy retirement in Greenville and many thousands of miles on the roads here with Robin and others!
